CHAPTER THREE

"I don't know what you're talking about." Elizabeth stuttered, turning away from Lucky.

"Elizabeth, I know you.  Look at me... look at me."

She turned to face him, but kept her distance from him, "You trusted me enough to bring you here, I mean you didn't kick or scream.
You can trust me enough to tell me Elizabeth." he told her.

She didn't speak.  "Okay, I'm going to start dinner, why don't you take a shower and get yourself settled." he said trying to ease her.

She nodded and picked up her stuff.   Watching her leave, Lucky vowed to himself, "I will make us better again Elizabeth, I swear it."

"Elizabeth can I ask you something?" Lucky said.

Liz looked up from the table, where she was writing, "Sure."

Lucky turned around on the couch, so he faced her completely, "Your parents didn't come when Audrey died... why?  Or is that too forward for you."

"I think Sarah told me when she came, but I don't remember hearing it."

"Oh... I'm sorry."

"No, it's okay.  Can I ask you something?"

"Shoot."

"Were you disappointed when Melissa came back to town with a fianc?"

"Elizabeth, I don't care about Melissa and what she does, I thought you knew that."

"I do, it's just that--"

"Elizabeth I don't love her."

"but Lucky--"

"I don't love her Elizabeth!  only you.  I love only you!"

"... I should go to sleep." Liz said picking up her stuff and leaving.  She left the kitchen, and into her room.

After a couple of minutes of calming down, Lucky went to her door and knocked, "Elizabeth?  Elizabeth, look, I'm sorry that I yelled.  Elizabeth?"
he opened the door and walked in,

"I don't get it Lucky," Elizabeth turned to face him.  She had clearly been crying, "How could anyone care for me?   Or even love me?"

Lucky walked across the room and pulled her into his arms.  He held her close and said, "Because you're special Elizabeth.   You're sweet and caring.  And so
beautiful and loving."

"I just don't get it." she said softly as he held her tighter.

"I'm sorry I made you cry." he whispered.  After her sobs died down, he picked her up and tucked her into bed.   He watched as she slept, caressing her emotionally
drained face and remembered when she once wore a smile.

Lucky lifted his head the find the bed empty, "Elizabeth?" he called out in to the darkness.  He saw that the bedroom door was open, so he went out of the room.
He found her on the couch, sitting perfectly still.... as still as the night in the rain, "Elizabeth?  Honey, what's wrong?" he asked, he knelt down in front of her and
shook her gently, "Elizabeth, it's Lucky... can you hear me?" he asked.

She nodded a little, "Oh.. good." he said, "Come on, we have to get you back asleep.  It's late."

"I'm not going back to sleep Lucky."

"It's okay, if you want, I could leave you alone.  I only stayed because I had to... I had to make sure that you were all right."

"It's not that.  I'm afraid... I'm afraid to close my eyes."

"Whatever you see, I'll try my best to take it away--"

"Don't you see Lucky, you can't.  No one can."

Lucky moved onto the couch, beside her, "Elizabeth... maybe we should talk about this."

"There's nothing to say." she answered looking away.

"..... Elizabeth... I just want you to know... that I'm sorry.  For everything.  I've been wanting to tell you that, but... I don't know."

"Why are you sorry Lucky, you didn't do anything wrong."

"I was the one who drove you away!   After we fought, after that argument, I was so mad that you wouldn't let me comfort you.  It was all my fault.  I was the one
who went to that party, and I was the one who fell into bed..... with Melissa.
