Chapter 28: Confronting Fear

Luke had managed to sneak Elizabeth back into the ICU. Visiting hours were over, but
she didn’t want to leave Lucky. He had agreed to do it, if he could go with her. He
couldn’t leave his son either.

Luke had gone to the cafeteria to get them coffee. She would wait for him in Lucky’s
room.

‘No, not again’ Lucky though as he stared at Tom Baker. He tried to yell, but Tom’s
hand over his mouth silenced him.
“No you don’t” Baker said, “We need to finish what we started”.
‘I can’t do this’ Lucky thought. ‘Not again’.
He felt himself shutting down. The events of the last 4 days were coming back to him.
He didn’t want to remember. He didn’t want to re-live it. He slowly retreated into
himself. He went back to his safe place, where darkness was his only companion.

Elizabeth was startled to see someone in the room with Lucky. Visiting hours were
over.
She was about to say something when she saw the man’s hand on Lucky’s mouth.
She flashed back to the night of her rape and could feel the same hand on her own
mouth.

He felt her, before he heard her. He turned to her and took a step forward.
“Well, well, what do we have here?”
“No...” Elizabeth stepped back, until she felt the wall at her back.
He advanced towards her, aware that she was absolutely terrified. ‘This is going to
be easy’ he though.
He stopped right in front of her, and put one hand on her shoulder.

Elizabeth shuddered as she felt his hand on her. She could see and feel it again. The
rape.
He looked horrible. There were bandages all over his face.

She was frozen. She couldn’t move at all.
He took one hand and lifted her face so that she was looking right at him.
‘God, please not again’ she silently pleaded.
She moved her face to one side, and saw Lucky. Her soul, the love of her life. His
eyes were open, yet he didn’t move at all.

All of a sudden, the fear, shame, and self pity left her. Unbelievable anger took
their place.
‘This is the son of a bitch that raped me’ she thought. ‘He black mailed Emily. He
beat and almost killed Lucky. I shouldn’t fear him, I should hate him’.

Tom leaned forward to kiss her, and she swung.

Elizabeth hadn’t realized she had moved until she felt her right fist connect with
Tom’s jaw. She let out a blood curdling scream, hoping that she would bring every
damn cop into the room.

Tom was about to strike her when Luke flew into the room and tackled him.

They fought, Luke having the upper hand, because he was running on both adrenaline
and pure hatred. Taggert rushed in with two other cops and separated them.

“What the hell is he doing here, and why aren’t you watching him?!?” Luke yelled.
“We were watching him, he just slipped out. Take him back to headquarters, and don’t
let him out of your sight” Taggert ordered.
The two cops cuffed Tom and led him out of the room.
Before they reached the door, Luke stopped them. He grabbed Tom by the front of his
shirt and pulled him closer to his face.
“You will spend the rest of your life in jail. I’ll make sure of that. If ,for some
reason, you’re ever released, you will be dead before you cross the street” Luke told
him.
He moved aside, and let the cops take him away.
“I’m really sorry about this” Taggert said. “Is Lucky ok? Elizabeth, are you?”
They both turned to Elizabeth who was looking down at Lucky and holding his hand.
“I’m fine” she said softly.
Luke went to her and looked at his son.
Lucky was awake, but his eyes weren’t seeing anything. They were focused on a far
away place that only he could see.
They both tried to talk to him, but he remained quiet and non responsive.
