Chapter 27: Comfort and Confusion
Voices. He heard voices. They seemed to come from a far away place. He reached out to
them, but he was being weighed down. He felt heavy and weak.
He knew the voices. He knew them, yet didnt recognize them. He couldnt make
out the
words they were saying, but he knew it was something comforting. The voices seemed to
be calling out to him, yet he couldnt respond.
He was in a dark place..... A safe place. No one could get to him here. No one could
hurt him here.
Where here was, though, he didnt know.
All he knew was that he didnt want to leave.
I love you... he heard.
It was a womans voice. A voice he knew well, but whos was it? He couldnt
place the
voice.
Were supposed to live the rest of our lives together....
Huh? rest of our lives? What was she talking about?
I cant imagine living the rest of my life without you...
Another womans voice. She, too, was familiar.
Lulu missed you...
Who is Lulu?
Hello, son....
A mans voice this time.
Son?
Im so proud of you, and I love you.....
His father? Who was it?
Hi, little brother.....
Another male voice, younger this time.
Little brother?
Please, wake up...
The four voices were saying it at once.
Wake up? I am awake. Im here, and Im fine.
The darkness lifted a bit, and he began to see faces. The faces of the people who had
been speaking to him, telling him to wake up.
Mom...? Dad...? Nikolas...? Is that you?
He tried to make his mouth move, but couldnt.
Elizabeth...?
The thought of Elizabeth made him fight the dark. He wanted, needed to see her.
He concentrated on where the voices were coming from and pulled himself in that
direction.
He still heard them, all talking at once. He slowly became aware of his surroundings.
There were noises. Beeps and hisses.
Am I in a hospital? Why? What happened?
There was someone in the room with him. Whoever it was, was getting closer. He tried
to open his eyes, but they refused to open.
The person came to the bed and took his hand. It hurt when it was picked up. There
was something on it. A cast?
He squeezed the hand, to let the person know that he was awake.
The person squeezed back, tightly, almost painfully.
After several tries, he finally managed to open his eyes. His vision was blurred at
first, but it cleared.
When it did, Lucky found himself staring into Tom Bakers eyes.
