Chapter 19: Friends and Enemies.

Elizabeth walked by the docks. It was late afternoon.
Audrey had convinced her that she needed some fresh air, and should take a walk.
Elizabeth hadn’t wanted to do it, but she didn’t want her grandmother worried about
her either. So she went.
There were too many memories here. All the talks she and Lucky had, even all of the
times they had just sat on one of the benches, came back to her. She could still
remember the night he’d been teaching her how to fish, and Luke and Laura had shown
up because she’d told Laura they’d be here, the time she had asked him to kiss her,
and she’d bolted. She could even recall the time she’d stood at the exact spot she
was now, and worried about him, because he was on Helena’s yacht, delivering the
papers he’d taken from ADA Jensen’s office.
Worried.... She was more than worried now, she was scared. Luke had called her
earlier to tell her about his talk with Sonny. Elizabeth hoped that he could help.
She knew he would certainly try.
“Liz?” she heard from behind, and turned to see Nikolas coming down the steps.
“Hi” she said.
“Hi. I didn’t want to scare you” he said.
“You didn’t”
“I wanted to stop by and see you earlier, but Luke told me I should wait”.
“You know?” she asked.
“Yeah. I was on my way to see Laura that night and wanted to cut through the park.
When I got there, a police officer told me I couldn’t pass. Mac Scorpio ended up
telling me. I’m so sorry Liz. Are you ok?”
She could talk to Nikolas, right? He was her boyfriend’s brother, after all,
trustworthy, right? He, just like Luke, could understand what she was going through,
because he must be going through the same thing.
“I miss him” she finally said. “I’m worried. I don’t want Tom to hurt him”.

Liz was unaware that the same thoughts were running through Nikolas head, about
Lucky, and about trusting Liz with his feelings.
“Me too. I wish there was more I could do to help him. I’ve already asked my father,
but he said that it was a problem for the Spencers to solve”.
“He won’t help?”
“He says there’s nothing he can do”. He walked over to the edge of the dock, and
stared at the water.
“The police haven’t found anything, you know” Liz said.
“Yeah. Amazingly enough, I called my mother and ended up talking to Luke. He told me
the latest”.
Nikolas didn’t mention anything about Sonny’s involvement, so Liz assumed that Luke
hadn’t told him. ‘He must have a reason’ she thought and decided to not tell Nikolas
either.
“He’s really worried” Elizabeth said.
“Yes, he is”. Nikolas paused to consider his next words. “Liz, can I tell you
something?”
“Sure”.
“I .....” he paused, unable to utter the next words.
“Nikolas?” Elizabeth asked, concerned.
“I need him to be ok. I need to get to know him” he said quickly, willing himself to
get the words out. “I’ve known him for two and a half years, yet I don’t really know
him. We spent so much time hating each other, that we never really tried to get
along. Now that we finally see each other as brothers and are getting along, this
happens”. He turned away from the water, and walked back to where she was still
standing. “I know he’s resourceful and imaginative, but he’s young. How can he
possibly hold up?”
“I don’t know, Nikolas” Elizabeth said, trying to comfort him. “All I know is that he
’s my better half. Without him with me, my life isn’t complete and never will be. You
’re right, he is resourceful. We’ll just have to hope that he will find a way out”.

They were both quiet for a moment, contemplating their own thoughts.
“If you want to talk about it, I’m willing to listen” Nikolas offered.
Liz thought about it for a second. Did she really want to dredge it up? Yes, she
needed reassurance, and so did Nikolas. They were both worried, and if they could
help each other, then why not.
“He wanted to erase the memories of last year” Liz said.
Nikolas looked up at her, understanding what she meant.
“He blamed himself for it, did you know that?” Liz asked.
“For the rape, why?” Nikolas asked. This he didn’t know.
“He was supposed to meet me at the dance, but Sarah asked him to go. He asked me if
that was all right, but I didn’t have the guts to tell him that I considered it a
date, and that I wanted him to take me. I went to the movies, and that’s how I ended
up in the park.”

Nikolas was speechless. He didn’t know any of this.
He also realized his part in it. If he hadn’t broken up with Sarah, she wouldn’t have
asked Lucky and...... ‘You can’t think about that now’ he told himself.
“I didn’t know” was all he said.
“This year, Lucky went all out. We went to Luke’s and he cooked dinner. We danced,
and enjoyed each other’s company. It was great. We were happy.....” she trailed off
as she began to get choked up.
“He gave me this” she showed Nikolas the heart.
“That’s beautiful, Liz. Lucky loves you a great deal, I know that. He will do
anything in his power to come back to you, you have know that”.
“I know, but what if it’s not enough. Nikolas, I can’t lose him”.
“You won’t. He’ll be fine, you’ll see”.

********

Tom returned to the cabin shortly after nightfall. He had gone into town to pick up
supplies. Luckily, the town was deserted at this time of year, and no one asked him
any questions.
He walked over to the pantry to put up the supplies. He saw that Lucky was asleep,
but he seemed to be having nightmares. He kept mumbling and moving around. Tom
kneeled beside him to see if he could make out what Lucky was saying, but he wasn’t
able to.
He got up and went to unpack his purchases.

‘I bought enough stuff to last me a while. I don’t know how long it’s going to take,
but we’re going to be here long enough for him to tell me why he sent me to jail’ he
thought. ‘I want to know why he decided to come after me. I didn’t do anything to
him. I was just trying to make a few extra bucks. The pictures weren’t going to harm
anyone, certainly not him. He didn’t see it that way, though, and came after me. He
will pay for that. I want him to feel pain and know that I’m the one causing it. I
want to look into his eyes and see his fear. Fear that I put there. His screams and
cries of mercy will only serve to pay for his mistakes’.
He made himself a sandwich and walked over to the couch to enjoy his dinner. As he
passed Lucky, he smiled.
‘Tomorrow, it will begin. Tomorrow, I will finally get my revenge’.
