Chapter 20:

“NOOO!” Lucky woke with a start. He’d been dreaming again. He couldn’t remember what
this one had been about, though.
“Good morning” Tom said, getting up from the couch. He had apparently been having
breakfast.
Lucky could still smell the odor of eggs and bacon in the air, and it made him sick.

Tom went to the counter that was next to Lucky and put his plate down. He kneeled
next to Lucky and reached back to undo the cuffs. He sat Lucky up and removed the
rope too.
He reached to the counter and grabbed another plate. He set it on Lucky’s lap.
“Eat this” he said and took his plate back to the couch to finish his own breakfast.

Lucky looked down at the plate. Bacon and eggs. He didn’t want to eat, but he knew he
needed to. He hadn’t eaten since, what, yesterday? The day before yesterday? He’d
lost count.
His arms were lying limp at his sides, and he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to move
them. He couldn’t feel them, so he slowly tried moving the fingers. They moved, but
the rush of blood into the veins was painful. He lifted the hand and then half of the
arm, until he was sure he still had the use of them. he rubbed the arms to get them
to feel normal again.
After a little while, he felt ready to pick up the fork. He did, and brought it up to
his mouth, but was shocked to feel that he couldn’t open it. His jaw was locked. He
put the fork down and with his fingers forced his mouth to open. It hurt like hell,
but it worked. He moved his jaw around a bit. Not much, because it hurt too much. He
knew that the fork wasn’t going to work, so he picked up some of the egg in his
fingers and put that in his mouth. It hurt to chew, but he forced himself to do it,
knowing that he had to eat.
He ended up forcing himself to eat 1/8 of the egg.

Tom was enjoying this immensely. He watched Lucky struggle, and derived pleasure from
it. He knew the kid was in pain, but was trying hard to hide it. He had to give him
credit for partially succeeding.
Tom couldn’t wait to see if Lucky would be able to get on his feet. After all, he had
spent a little over 24 hours on the floor, lying on his side.
‘It should prove to be interesting’ he though.
“If you want to get up, you can” Tom said.
‘Let the battle begin’ he thought.

********
Luke had another sleepless night and was wondering outside the house when he saw
Sonny’s limo pull into the driveway. It was 8:30 in the morning, very early for Sonny
to be out conducting business.
He walked over to it, and waited for Sonny to get out.
“What have you got?” asked Luke.
“A couple of guys we have working for us, told us that the Elmira police department
had found an abandoned vehicle 30 miles outside the city limits, on the side of the
road. I told him we were on the way to take a look”.
“How far away is that?” Luke asked.
“6 hours by car. They said they would wait until we got there, so let’s go”.
“What makes them think it’s related?’ Luke asked.
“The car was found right outside the driveway, what passes for a driveway in those
parts, of a farm house. The owners were the ones who found the car, after they
noticed their truck was missing”.
“Still, they could have headed North into Canada, instead of south”.
“It would have been much riskier to try to cross the border. Also, an off duty deputy
sheriff made a call to dispatch at about 4am the day Lucky was taken to alert the
dispatch of a man in his 30’s traveling with his teen age son to an unknown
destination. Apparently, the officer wanted dispatch to be aware that they were out
there”.
“Why didn’t they report this sooner?”
“It’s a small town. They hardly ever get any crimes there. They didn’t think anything
of it”.
Luke didn’t even think twice. He started to get into the limo with Sonny, when
another car came whizzing into his driveway. It was a Jag, so Luke knew that Nikolas
was behind the wheel.
“Where are you going?” Nikolas asked as he got out of his car.
“What makes you think I owe you any explanations?” Luke replied. “What are you doing
here anyway?”
“I’m here to see my mother. Why is he here?” Nikolas asked pointing at Sonny. “It has
to do with Lucky, doesn’t it?”
“Like I said, I don’t owe you anything”.
“No, but you owe your son. Wherever you’re going, I want to go”.
“No way am I involving a Cassadine” Luke said.
“I’m Lucky’s brother and I want to help, shouldn’t that be enough?”
Luke was about to say something when Sonny stepped forward.
“We’re wasting time, Luke”.
Luke though about it. ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this’.
“Get in” he said. “We’ll call Laura a bit later”.

********

“Commissioner!” Taggert yelled as walked into Mac’s office.
“What is it Taggert?”
“We’ve just gotten a report of a deputy sheriff in Elmira, NY making a call to
dispatch asking the other officers to be aware that there was a man traveling with
his teen age son in a snow storm. He wanted help to be available for them if they got
stranded”.
“Could it be Baker?”
“Possibly” Taggert responded. “Elmira is about 6 hours away by car, the time frame
would be about right. Elmira is also close to the Vermont border. Lots of mountains
and rough terrain, once you leave New York state. A good place to hide”.
“Get Garcia. We’re going to Elmira.”
