Chapter 15: Liz walked into the gift shop. She wanted to get a present for
Lucky. She didn't want to take the time to leave the hospital though. What should she get? The selection wasn't huge. She browsed through
the get well cards on the rack. They were all too corny. She decided chocolate would
have
to do. When she was about to go pay for the box of chocolates she noticed
the little stuffed animals saying "Congrats on your newborn" that people gave to
new mothers. Liz thought of the confused expression that would be on Lucky's face
if she gave that to him. She was going to have to tell him she was pregnant. SHe tossed
the chocolates back where she found them and grabbed one of the little bears. After she paid for the ridiculously expensive bear she walked back
up to where everyone was stnading outside Lucky's door. "Still not awake?" Liz asked Luke. "No, its taking forever!" Luke tried to sound annoyed but
everyone could tell he was happy. Everyone seemed as if a weight had been lifted from
their shoulders since this morning. Had it only been 5 hours since Gram had died? It seemed like
forever. THe time since she entered the hospital to see Lucky till now seemed like days. Nickolas walked over to her,"What have you got there Liz?" She showed him, carefully averting it so nobody else could see the
writing. Nik laughed,"I'd love to see my little brothers face when he
sees that." "See what?" Laura asked from her place beside Luke. "Oh, I just bought him a little stuffed animal as a get well
present, corny I know." Liz tried to cover her tracks, all flustured. Her explanation seemed acceptable. Liz sighed in relief, then shot a
murderous glance at Nik. He just shrugged. The nurse who had been in there with lucky came out of his
room,"He's awake." Everyone tried to force their way in first. The nurse held up her
hands,"Which one of you is Elizabeth." "I am,"Liz said, confused. "He wants to seee you first," the nurse said
smiling,"alone." It was obvious Laura, for one, wanted to object but decided she
could wait ehr turn to see Lucky. Liz walked into the room carrying the little bear. Lucky was lying
on the hospital bed, still hooked up to machines but awake this time. "Lucky," Liz breathed, it was all she could say. He smiled,"In the flesh." "Oh Lucky!" she ran over and hugged him, setting the bear
down on the chair by the bed. Lucky winced and Liz immediately apologized,"Sorry, I forgot
you'll still be sore from surgery." Lucky sobered,"THey told me about your grandmother, and how you
had to decide. I'm so sorry it had to happen this way Liz. I would never ahev wanted
Audrey to die just so I could live.' Liz's eyes brimmed with tears for about the millioth time
today,"Thanks Lucky. I'm just so happy you are alive. It would have been hard to live
without you." THen a thought occured to her of somehting she should ask.
"Lucky, when you were in the coma, do you remember anyhting anyone said to you?" "No, should I?" Lucky asked. "No, just wondering." Well, its now or never, Liz thought, "I have a get well present
for you Lucky." "FOr me? What is it?" Lucky asked anxiously. "Don't be so impatient," Liz scolded turning around to
grab the bear. "Here you go," she said, handing it to him. He looked at the bear, confused,"I don't get it. Was this all
the gift shop had?" "No Lucky, I bought it for a reason," Liz told him,
waiting for him to get it. She could pinpoint the moment he realized what she meant. "Liz, you're....no this isn't right," Lucky blustered. "You're going to be a father Lucky," Liz asuured him,
tears glistening in ehr eyes, tears of joy. "Oh. My. God." Lucky said, leaning back against the
pillow. "You're not upset are you?" Liz asked anxiously. "No Liz, I'm not. But are you sure? It was just that one time
we didn't use protection." "Yes Lucky, I'm sure. I became positive this morning." "Are you okay with this?" Lucky asked, concerned. "Lucky, I'm not going to pretend I wouldn't have liked to wait,
but I'm still ecstatic. It's our child Lucky." The truth seemed to finally sink in, "I'm going to be a
father!" He grinned, but then thought of a sobering idea. "What if I ahd
died Elizabeth? You would have been alone and pregnant." "DOn't think about that Lucky, you didn't die, you're right
here adn you're going to be a great father to your child. Even if you had died, I would
ahev been fine." "Have you told anybody yet?" Lucky asked. "Nickolas knows, but that's it. I sorta figured I'd let you
inform your parents." Liz said. "THanks," Lucky said sarcastically, "From my mother
I'll get to be lectured on 'how could you take advantage of her, wehn you were dying no
less' and from my father on the subject of condoms." "First off, I won't let them. This is all of my doing. If
anyhting, I took advantage of you."Liz told him. "They're not going to see it that way Elizabeth, they are going
to be royally pissed off." "Well, we will survive their wrath. We've survived everyhting
else," Liz said, taking his hand. "Should we tell people right away?" Lucky asked her. "Might as well get it over with. Beside, they're so ahppy
you're okay, it might go over better." "Agreed," Lucky said,"Why don't you go call everyone
in?" Liz walked to the door and opened it,"You can all come in
now." Everyone hurried in but Liz managed to get back to the lone chair
beside the bed. "Now, I know we have a lot of sentimental stuff to go
through," Lucky began,"but Liz and I ahve some news." Nickolas snickered from the corner, relizing the storm taht was
about to happen. Liz glared at him. Lucky took her hand,"Elizabeth is pregnant." |
