CHAPTER ONE

Elizabeth felt herself fly in the rain.   She was too tired to wonder why she was flying.  She could feel strong arms around her,
and she couldn't help but shiver when she suddenly felt warmthness around her.

"Elizabeth." Lucky called to her.

He gently placed her in a booth inside of Kelly's.  Ruby immediately rushed to pour her some hot chocolate.  Lucky took his jacket and
wrapped it around Elizabeth who was shaking like a leaf.  Lucky sat down beside her as Ruby gave the cup to Lucky.  He handed it to Elizabeth
who shakily accepted it.  She took a sip of it and nearly let it fall.

"It's okay." Lucky said, taking the cup.

Liz shook her head, "No, it's not." she whispered, "I don't think it ever will be."

"Don't say that." he whispered back.

"I have to go." she said trying to get past Lucky.

"Elizabeth, no.  Not yet." he said blocking her, "I don't want you alone in your house."

"You can't help that..... Gram's gone." she told him.  The tone of her voice brought him back to the night he found her in the park.

"Elizabeth, are you okay?  Are you hurt anywhere?"  he asked her as Ruby sent him a puzzling look.

She shook her head and said, "I have to go."

"Okay, okay.. Just... just let me take you somewhere safe."

"My house is safe Lucky."

"Just stay over at my mom's.  Mom and dad won't mind.  And you'll get to see LuLu in the morning.  She'll be happy to see you... same with mom."

Liz opened her mouth to protest but Lucky wrapped his arm around her waist and led her outside.

Liz and Lucky quietly slipped into the house.   The lights were out, and it was quiet.

"My parents are probably asleep, since it's so late at night.  Let me take you to my room." he said.

"I can take the couch Lucky."

"I want you to take my room Elizabeth, please.  It's warmer and.... and I feel like it's the only thing I can give you."

Liz didn't respond.

"Okay." he said taking her upstairs.

He went straight to his dresser and pulled out a long sleeved shirt.  He tossed it on the bed and helped Liz take off her coat.

"No, it's okay.. I can do this be myself." she said the second he touched her.

"Okay.. I'm sorry..."  Liz closed her eyes, "I'm going to go down and make us some soup okay?"  Lucky told her.  She nodded, as he left the room.

Elizabeth turned and stared at the mirror in front of her.  Sighing, she changed into Lucky's long shirt and bundled her own wet clothes on a chair.
She crawled into Lucky's bed, picking up one of the bears LuLu left there.  She got comfortable, and soon fell asleep.

Downstairs, Lucky worried like crazy.  He hasn't seen Elizabeth like this, so quiet and scared for a long time.  He knew that after they broke off,
they broke off all contact which meant that when Audrey died, all Elizabeth had was herself and for couple days, Sarah, who flew back from London.
A few months later, Laura told him that they were visiting.

"She's changed Lucky, no one can reach her.  But i think you can Lucky.  You always could." she had told him.

And three weeks ago, Laura told him that she hadn't seen Elizabeth at all.  He thought about what Laura said, and then reminded him of how
badly things ended between Elizabeth and him.  As Lucky slipped quietly back to his room, he saw Elizabeth asleep.

He placed the bowl on the desk and thought, "Maybe I'm all she has left."

Laura crept down the stairs and found Lucky asleep on the couch.  As she walked towards him, he woke up.

Laura asked him, "You're room is upstairs, why did you stay down here?  You wouldn't of woken me and your dad up."

"Elizabeth is upstairs in my room." he told her as she sat down, "i was at Kelly's and there she was.  Just standing in the rain.  She wasn't moving
and it looked like she had trouble breathing again."

"So you brought her here."

"Basically.  Is that okay?"

"Of course, Lucky.  You don't have to ask about Elizabeth."

".....Mom, I think there's something wrong with Elizabeth.  Not physically, but emotionally.  She hardly spoke a word to me yesterday and that look on her face...."

"I've seen it too, Lucky.  You can help her, I know you can.  And I'll help anyway I can."

"I know, which is why I need to ask you for money."

"Lucky, what are you planning?"

"A surprise."
