Chapter 7: Regrets

Luke quietly made his way into the house. It was a little past eleven, so he knew Laura would be up. He just hoped Lulu was already in bed.

The living room was dark and quiet, so he assumed that Laura had gone upstairs. He walked up the steps slowly, dreading having to tell her that Lucky was missing, maybe even dead.

He stopped just outside the door of the room that used to be Lucky’s. He opened the door and looked inside.

The room looked deserted. As it should, since Lucky hadn’t set foot in it for about eleven months. Nothing had been touched though. The books, cd’s, computer, and toys left over from childhood were still there.

The child that used to live here was not the same one he’d seen at Kelly’s the day after Ruby’s memorial service. Lucky had grown up so much in the past 11 months, but the fact remained that he was just sixteen.

Luke wanted to kill Tom. If that bastard did anything to his son, he would pay. It all seemed so unfair. They were just starting to rebuild their relationship. How could something happen to Lucky now?

He was startled out of his musings, when he felt a hand on his arm. He whirled around to face Laura. He could tell that she had been crying.

"Something happened to him, didn’t it" she said. It was a statement, not a question.

"How do you know?"

"You wouldn’t just come into the house and stare at his room unless something happened."

She got quiet for a moment and he could see the tears welling up in her eyes. "I felt it" she said almost in a whisper.

Luke looked at her, not understanding what she meant.

"Remember when we had to run separately, after Frank found us in Canada, and I would get these feelings, like he was in danger. It turned out, after hearing Lucky’s version of what happened to him when he got here, that I had been right.

I also got that same feeling when he was shot, that’s why I went looking for Sonny, to find you. Well, I was getting ready for bed, and suddenly, I felt an overwhelming need to see him and make sure he was ok. I called his apartment and no one answered. I told myself that I was being silly, that he was probably out with Elizabeth. No matter what I told myself, though, the feeling wouldn’t go away, and seeing you here just confirms it".

They were interrupted by a very loud knock on the door. Luke rushed down the stairs, hoping it would be Mac with news, Laura right behind him. They were both startled to see Nikolas on the other side of the door.

"Nikolas!" Laura spoke first.

"I heard what happened, I wanted to make sure you were all right. Luke probably already told you what happened".

"No, he just got here. Why don’t you come in, and he can tell us both".

Luke was too preoccupied to think of any witty remarks, he just closed the door and sank down on the nearest couch.

"How did you find out?" he finally asked.

"I was on my way here, to see Laura. I wanted to cut through the park, because it’s faster, but a police officer stopped me. Finally, Mac Scorpio came over and filled me in".

"The park?" Laura asked. "Luke, what happened?"

"Lucky’s missing".

"What?!?"

He went on to retell how he ran into Elizabeth and the things he had found. Laura was openly crying now. Nikolas looked shocked.

"What did the police tell you?" Luke asked Nikolas.

"The commissioner said that he had put out APB’s on both Tom Baker and Lucky, and that he had squad cars patrolling the area."

"My baby," Laura said. "He’s going to be all right, isn’t he?" she asked.

Luke looked into the eyes of the only woman he had ever loved and wanted to do anything to make the pain go away. He reached out to her and was surprised when she rushed into his arms and buried her head in his chest, sobbing. He lost it there too, letting the tears of frustration, anger, and pain come rushing out.

Neither one noticed, or cared, that Nikolas was also in the room.
