Chapter 3: Desperation

"Gone" Elizabeth said in a whisper.

"Liz, tell me what’s going on" Luke asked her as gently as he could.

Elizabeth just sat there, hugging her knees to her chest. Rocking slowly back and forward.

"Liz," Luke tried again, "if you want me to help Lucky, you have to tell me what happened".

Elizabeth softly told him the events of the night. "Today is the one year anniversary of my rape. I asked Lucky to come here with me so I could finally put it behind me. I was sitting on the bench, reliving it, when I felt someone put a hand over my mouth. I opened my eyes and saw Lucky on the ground. I fought him, but he was too strong. Suddenly, he let go, and I saw Lucky run into him. He looked at me and told me to run, so I left". She began to sob uncontrollably and Luke put a comforting arm around her.

After he had calmed her enough, he got up and went towards the bench. What he saw made his blood turn to ice.

Behind the bench was a patch of dirty snow. However, even in the moonlight he could tell that the snow wasn’t dirty, it was bloody. Beside that he found a solitary gold hoop earring. An earring that he himself had bought and given to his son on his fourteenth birthday.

He went back to Elizabeth and handed her his cellular phone.

"Call the police" was all he said as he walked back towards the bench.

As he walked back, he noticed drops of blood on other parts of the ground. They seemed to lead away towards the other end of the park. He followed the trail until it ended, and was rewarded with a small black object. A wallet. He opened it, knowing well what he would find. He wasn’t disappointed. It was Lucky’s wallet. His ID and several family pictures were in it, along with a picture of Elizabeth.

Luke felt as if he had just been hit with a hammer. What the hell had happened to his son? Where was he? Was he dead? Was he dying? His thoughts were interrupted as he heard the police sirens in the background. He looked up at the bright moon and did something he hadn’t done in a long time: he prayed.
