Chapter 22: Confrontation

Authors note: There’s some strong language in this one.

Lucky was sitting by the front window, watching the snow fall. Tom hadn’t moved from
his spot on the couch, and neither had Lucky, once he’d actually gotten there.

It had been difficult getting up. His legs had refused to hold him up. He fell a few
times, but was determined to make it.
Tom had watched him in silent fascination. He never made a move to help him, but didn
’t discourage him either.
Once Lucky managed to remain up, it had been hard getting his legs to obey his
commands. He’d walked a few clumsy steps, and fallen. He was reminded of when he was
re-learning how to walk after being shot. He had the same helpless feeling. Mom wasn’
t here to hold him up this time, though.
At the thought of his mother, he cringed. What must she be feeling right now? What
did she think?
He was finally able to walk to the other end of the room, and around a bit. He felt
tired and sat by the window. He hadn’t moved since.

“Now you’re going to tell me why” Tom said, suddenly.
“Why what?” Lucky asked.
“Why you decided to hurt me”
“What? I didn’t do anything to you” Lucky wasn’t sure where this conversation was
going, but he didn’t like it.
“You had me sent to jail”
“What? You were black mailing my friend, and were getting ready to do it to my
brother”.
“I was trying to make some extra money. I never meant to hurt anyone. I never hurt
you.”
“You terrorized a 15 year old girl. That’s inexcusable!” Lucky yelled.
“Now we get to the root of it. Are we still talking about Emily, or have we moved on
to Elizabeth”. Tom said.
The way Tom said Elizabeth’s name made Lucky cringe.
“Either one. What you did to them was wrong!” Lucky fired back.
Tom got up and began to pace.
“Wrong?” Tom said. “They were asking for it. They dressed like sluts. They were
obviously advertising.”
“What gives you the right to determine that?”
“Did you see her in that pretty red dress?” Tom asked referring to Elizabeth now. “A
dress that clearly showed all of her curves? It obviously said ‘I’m available’”.
“You bastard!” Lucky yelled. “She wasn’t asking to be raped!”
Tom went over to him and grabbed him by the front of his shirt, pulling him out of
the chair.
“Wasn’t she?” Tom slowly said. “I say she was. She was great, too....”.
That did it for Lucky. He took his free arm and swung at Tom. Smiling when the blow
connected with Tom’s jaw.
Tom was caught off guard by the blow. He was caught off balance and the blow sent him
to the floor, taking Lucky with him. Once on the floor, he pinned Lucky down and
slammed his head into the floor. He wanted to kill him right then, but he hadn’t
gotten the answers out of Lucky yet. ‘Don’t rush this’ he told himself.
He got off of Lucky and got up.
Lucky slowly followed. He was a bit disoriented by the blow, but could still stand.

“You still haven’t told me why”.
Lucky stood there, unsure of what to say. What could he say? That Tom was the scum of
the earth and deserved what he got? Tom wouldn’t like that.
“Why? You were hurting someone I love. I had to help”.

Tom didn’t respond to that. He continued to pace.
“She liked it” Tom finally said referring, once again to Elizabeth. “She was yelling
for more..”
“You sick, son of a bitch” Lucky interrupted him. “She was yelling for you to stop”.
“I don’t think so. She wanted me.”

‘What the hell is wrong with this bastard?’ Lucky though. ‘How can he possibly think
that Elizabeth enjoyed it? Didn’t he see her cry? Didn’t he see the blood?’

“I stayed and watched her. I watched her put her dress back together. I watched her
crawl out. I watched as she flinched away from you. I watched as you picked her up
and led her to a bench, asking her what had happened. I knew she wouldn’t tell. What
we shared was special. She would never tell”. He paced some more, coming to a stop in
front of where Lucky was standing. “I followed you to your house. I saw as you left
her alone, and was about to go inside when your father got there. He ruined my
moment. So did you. Ever since, you’ve been with her all of the time. I’ve wanted to
re-live that night for so long, but you’ve always been in the way. You’ve always been
there. Not after tonight though. I’ll remove you from the picture permanently”. Tom
said and stepped closer to Lucky.

Lucky finally realized what Tom had been planning all along. Tom was going to kill
him and go after Elizabeth anyway. Lucky would die, before he let that happen. If he
was going to die, he would put up one hell of a fight.
“Not if I can help it!” Lucky yelled and rushed Tom.

“We’ve been looking all afternoon and haven’t found anything” Sonny said. “We’ve been
to dozens of cabins, and found nothing. They have all been empty”.
“How do we know that they crossed the border into Vermont? They could have gone
anywhere else” Nikolas said.
“No...” Luke said. “They came this way”.
“How do you figure that?” Sonny asked.
“Tom would have wanted a secluded place. This part of the state is full of mountains
and mountain cabins. It’s also very isolated”.
“There doesn’t seem to be much traffic around here. Maybe they went somewhere else”
Nikolas said.
“If they came here, the fact that roads aren’t well traveled will help us”.
“How....?” Nikolas began to ask, but broke off when something outside caught his eye.
“Stop!” he yelled to the driver.
The limo lurched to a halt and Luke and Sonny looked at him in confusion.
“What is it?” Luke asks.
“Go back” Nikolas tells the driver, who obeyed. “Look” he said and pointed to a
little road that forks off the one they were on.
“Tire tracks in the snow” Luke says.
Sonny immediately understands what Luke means. He instructs the driver to follow the
tracks.
It was a long winding road, but the tracks got more defined as they got closer to the
cabin that was off in the distance.
They could also see multiple tracks. They were made by the same type of tire, so it
was safe to assume that they were made by the same vehicle.
Slowly, but surely, they made their way to the cabin.
