| Chapter One: Emily tapped her fingers on the oak desk next to a three day old copy of the Port Charles Herald. She looked at the picture again. Lucky, Elizabeth and Nikolas. The three of them smiling, the picture was from June. Emily was sure of it, it had to be the nurses ball she could see Stones patch in the far corner. Now it was the beginning of September and Elizabeth and Nikolas were gone from this world. She looked down at the caption, "Nikolas and Elizabeth Cassadine, tragically died Thursday evening in a car accident." Emily sighed as she turned her chair to look out over the San Francisco bay bridge. "I have to say good-bye." She said out loud to no one. The doors to her office opened and man a few years younger then Emily walked in. "Miss Quartermaine, the shipment from New York arrived .Is something wrong Em?" "Im fine Tom, I um have to leave town for a couple days." Tom looked at the paper on her desk. "Of course Emily. Ill make sure everything here runs smoothly while you take care of everything." Emily rises and looks around the room, "Thanks Im leaving now." Emily hadnt allowed herself to cry until she stepped onto her private Jet. As the plane took off she broke down into full sobs. She cried all the way back to Port Charles. She didnt even think about Lucky and the last time she had seen him. All she could think about was how her two best friends had died before she was ever able to tell them the real reason she had left. When the plane landed Emily tried to compose herself. She grabbed her black floppy hat, and placed it on her head. The brim hid her face and eyes. Her black dress hugged her body and she walked off the plane and to a car waiting to take her to the cemetery. The car drove down the winding roads of the cemetery and finally stopped where several other cars had parked. Emily stepped out and stood in the back away from the others. She saw Laura standing next to Alexis and Lucky. The service began and Emily stood there alone wishing this had never happened, wishing there had been something she could have done to prevent this. After the service Emily stayed as did Lucky. She stood there waiting for him to leave so she could say her final good-byes but he wasnt leaving. Finally after what seemed like years of waiting for the other to move, Emily walked closer to the graves. She looked at the gray stones and tears filled her eyes. This is all that was left of Nikolas and Elizabeth. Lucky turned and looked over at her. At first he wasnt sure who this woman in a body hugging black dress and huge floppy black hat was. But then as she reached out to touch the engraved names and dates he knew who it was. She stepped back and her hand went to her face to wipe the falling tears. When she spoke her voice was raspy but still it made Luckys heart swell. "Bye Nik, Liz. I wish I had been able to explain it to you." Emily began to walk away when someone grabbed her arm. She turned around to face the brute. "Your back?" he asked softly. "Im leaving again." She said coldly. "At least come over to my place for something to eat." He said. "Why would I care to do that Mr. Spencer." "Mr. Spencer? Thats what you call your ex-husband?" "Thats what I call a man I barely know. If youll excuse me I need to get home." "Emily, please." Emily looked into his eyes, she couldnt resist him. "For a few minutes. I really must get back to the coast." The coast? He thought to himself. It was some clue as to where his angel was. "Well then Mrs. Spencer, my car is this way. "Miss Quartermaine." She said as she walked towards the car with him. "You went back to your maiden name?" he asked as he opened the passenger side door. "Yes, it seemed the reasonable thing to do seeing as we divorced eight years ago." She said looking out the window as they drove through the town. "I guess so, So where is it your living on the coast?" He asked trying tog et her to tell him where he could find her. "San Francisco." She said coolly. "I run a jewelry company there." "Oh, which company is it? I know Nikolas invested in quite a few for Elizabeth before the accident." He said trying not to allow the sadness in his voice show. "A fairly large company, Its called Catacomb Jewels." She said as she looked down and studied her hands. "Thats you?" He asked surprised. "Yes, I know Nikolas wasnt an investor in fact all of the investors were myself and um Tom." "Oh, your boyfriend?" "Tom and I could never be together." She said with a small smile. "Oh and why is that?" "Lucky, Toms gay." "Oh." He said as he parked the car. He got out and walked around and opened Emilys door. She stepped out and realized he hadnt moved from their house. The house they had picked out, and had begun to renovate ten years earlier. "You still live here?" She asked as they walked up the path. "No reason to move is there?" He asked as they walked up the porch steps. "None that I know of." She stopped at the edge of the porch and he turned to look at her. "Emily, why did you stop?" "Spencer, why did you want me to come over here. I thought you would never want to see me again." "Emily the truth is .well Ill show you." He took her hand and led her inside and upstairs to what Emily had always thought would be the bedroom for their first child. Well if she had been able to conceive. Lucky pushed to door open and inside there was a crib with a baby boy sitting up and clapping his hands when he saw Lucky. "Emily, Id like you to meet Jeffery Cassadine. Hes Nikolas and Elizabeths son. Id like to adopt him. Even though I am his uncle the courts would prefer that I be married." Emily looked at him knowing exactly what he was getting at. "Lucky you cant be serious." "Emily, it doesnt have to be about love. Do it so this child can have a parent in his life, do it for Nikolas and Elizabeth." "That is LOW Lucky, bringing the deceased into this." He looked at her giving him his begging puppy dog eyes. "Alright." She said. "Ill do this but for this child." "Thank you Emily. We can work everything out in a few hours." "Lucky I have to get back to San Francisco." "Please at least stay tonight so we can plan this and then you can leave and when you return you and I will be married and then well start the procedure to adopt Jeffery." "Alright." She said as she yawned unknowingly. "Tired?" He asked. "Well I havent slept since I found out." "Come with me, you can sleep in one of the guestrooms." He said as he and Emily walked out of the room and down the hall. About four doors away Lucky opened one and smiled. "Your favorite one I believe." He said as they walked in. "You havent redecorated it?" "I couldnt it was always yours Em." Oh God, Emily thought to herself. How can he be doing this to me. Im over him. I dont love him in fact I hate him. But why did I just agree to what I just agreed to? For Nikolas and Elizabeth. To make up for not being there when I told them I would be. "Ill leave you alone. Ill wake you in about three hours? Does that sound good?" He asked as he stood in the doorway. Emily turned to him and smiled. "That sounds fine." Lucky left and closed the door. As the door closed Emily began to unbutton her dress and slid out and quickly under the covers of the bed wearing nothing but her panties and her bra. Only seconds after her head hit the pillow she was asleep. A few moments later Lucky lightly knocked on the door when there was no answer he opened it and saw her sleeping. He shook his head and smiled. "Well you wont be needing this then." He said out loud looking at one of his shirts. He walked over to the chair next to the bed and looked at her. She shifted in her sleep and the blanked moved exposing her almost completely bare back. Lucky reached out and touched her shoulders. She didnt wake up and he could feel the knots from the stress of at least the past few days. He couldnt resist the urge to try and help her get rid of those knots. He began rubbing and caressing her shoulders. After several minutes he forced himself to stop and left the shirt on the chair and left the room. When Emily woke up her back felt less stressed and she looked up and saw the shirt sitting on the chair. Emily reached down on the floor and picked up the dress. She put it back on and ran her hands through her tired hair and put her shoes back on and opened the door. Just as she did Lucky was about to knock on the door. "Hi." She said softly not sure what else she should or could say. "Hi, you sleep well?" He asked. "Actually quite well. I havent slept that well in ages." She remarked. Wanting to add, not since the last time we shared a bed. But she couldnt. She couldnt and wouldnt allow her self to think that way. "Well dinners ready, are you hungry?" "Yeah I am." They go downstairs and Lucky leads Emily into the kitchen. Jeffery is in a high chair and the table is set. "Lucky, you learned to cook?" "Well after you left someone had to." He had to mention that didnt he! She screamed in her mind. If only he knew the real reason. She couldnt give him what he wanted most in the world. Yet now eight years after she walked out of the front door planning on never returning she was sitting there with him at the kitchen table, having agreed to marry him again and help him adopt his nephew. She tried to tell herself, this was how she could finally help him get what she couldnt give him when they were first and truly married ..A Child. "Yes, well things never turn out the way we plan them do they?" "Of course not. If they did, you wouldnt be here but yet you would be." "What? Im not sure what your saying Spencer." "Simple, if things had gone the way we planned them Nikolas and Liz would still be alive and you and I would never have divorced." "Im sure we would have no matter what." She said knowing she was lying as she looked down at her hands so she wouldnt be able to see the pained expression in his face and his eyes. "Your probably right." He sat down across from her and took her hand. "Emily, you sure you want to do this?" "Yeah I am. This cutie needs to have a loving parent." "Well then, can you come back to Port Charles next weekend? We can have a Justice of the Peace marry us here in the living room. You can come back to town every other weekend or such. Just to make sure they know were um together." Emily cocks her head. "You could also come with Jeffrey to San Francisco on the other weekend just to um..make it well more real." "Will you be willing to show up here for um . Charity events a um wife should be at with her um husband." "Only if you agree to show up at the Charity events I have to attend." "Its a deal then. Anything else?" "Sleeping arrangements." Lucky gulps and looks at her, "um um " "Lucky, Ill stay in the guestroom Im in now. There is no way in this world I would expect you to share your bed with me. Were only going to be married so that Jeffrey will have two parents, at least for the first what two? Three years?" "Two years, it should take six months for an adoption and then well um just to make everything um look normal a two year marriage." "Same length as our last one sounds about right." "Well then I guess that uh everything settled." "Yeah Everything seems to be settled." Emily responded. Except for the fact that I may be falling in love with you all over again Lucky Spencer. She thought to herself.
After Dinner Emily and Lucky put Jeffery to bed and Lucky escorted Emily to her room. Emily opened the door and took his hand. Lucky was shocked by this. "Well, Emily I guess this is good night." "Yeah, Thank you for leaving this shirt for me." "Your welcome." Lucky began to leave when Emily grabbed his arm. He turned around and looked into her eyes. His mind flashed back to the night they eloped. Emily and Lucky are in a Las Vegas wedding chapel. Emily is wearing a white tee-shirt and a pair of light blue jeans. Lucky is wearing Blue jeans and a black tee-shirt. The Justice of the peace, who is dressed up like Tom Jones. Emily snaps her fingers in front of Luckys face. "Lucky? You blanked out on me, you okay?" "Yeah I was just thinking about the wedding ceremony." "Oh, well this time I think Ill be wearing a white suit instead of a tee-shirt and jeans." "Yeah, Ill be wearing a suit this time around." He stepped back and looked at her body. He only wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her, and then lay her on the bed and make love to her. "Well Good-night Lucky. Ill see you in the morning." "Night Emily." He leaned forwards and kissed her softly on the lips. He stayed there a few minutes longer then expected and she began kissing back. Lucky picks her up and places her on the bed. He kisses her hungrily and begins to unbutton her dress. She in response begins to unbutton his shirt and pushes it off his shoulders. Lucky pulls her dress down and it falls to the floor. He begins to kiss her neck and shoulders. Emily lets out a soft moan, trying to convince him not to stop. Lucky put his hands on her shoulders and was about to move her bra strap down off her shoulders as he sat up looked at her and spoke. "We cant do this Em. Its not right." Lucky grabbed his shirt and left the room closing the door behind him. Emily sat up and leaned against the head board of the bed. She could feel the tears burning in her eyes. Why, oh why couldnt he make love to me? Am I not desirable? Have I hurt him too much? I know he doesnt love me but still, it would have only been sex. Something that both of us obviously wanted and need. Emily leans down and picks up the shirt he had left earlier and puts it on. She then goes under the covers and cried herself to sleep. |
