Chapter 25: The Inevitable Truth

Laura and Elizabeth waited frantically at GH. Luke had called and told them that he
had found Lucky, but that he’d been hurt.
He was having Lucky transferred directly to GH, because he knew that Lucky would get
the best care.

They heard the bustle of activity behind them, and turned to see what was going on.
They saw Luke, before realizing that the person in the stretcher in front of him was
Lucky.

They both gasped when they saw him. The paramedics didn’t even stop, so Laura was
left staring after her son.
Luke came over and enveloped them both in a hug. Laura was sobbing, but Elizabeth was
stoically calm. He took them both over to a couch and sat them down.
“What did he do?” Elizabeth asked. “How much did he hurt him?”
“I don’t know, Liz. He seems to have broken bones, but I don’t know anymore than
that”.
“Oh, God,” Laura said. “What happened. How did you find them? Where?”
“They were in a cabin in Vermont. We followed the general direction and after about a
half a day of dead ends, we found them”.
“Why, Luke? Why did he hurt Lucky. What happened?” Laura asked through her tears.
“I don’t know. Tom must have been in the process of beating Lucky when we got there,
because he heard us and met us at the front door. He then took off and we caught him”
.
“Where is he now?” Elizabeth asked.
“In police custody. He won’t hurt anyone again, Liz. I promise you that” Luke said.

Sonny and Nikolas came in then. They were about to tell them about Tom, when the
doctor came out.
“Mr. and Mrs. Spencer?” the doctor wearily approached them.
“How is he?” Laura asked, standing up. Luke was right behind her.
“Well,” the doctor began, “your son has been through a lot. He’s very lucky to still
be alive”.
“How badly was he hurt?” Elizabeth asked.
“He’s suffered some major trauma. He has three broken ribs and a few fractured ones.
His left wrist is fractured, along with two of the fingers in that hand. The worst
damage was to his face. His jaw was broken, and he has a concussion. That, along with
the cuts and bruises, the loss of blood, and the fact that he’s dehydrated and
malnourished have added up”.
He paused for a second to regroup. “I’m sorry, but your son has slipped into a mild
coma. The physical factors have a lot to do with it, but I think this coma is mostly
a result of his emotional state”.
“What do you mean?” Luke asked.
“Many times, when a person has suffered a traumatic experience, the mind refuses to
deal with it, and shuts down. Normally, this would be temporary and nothing to be
concerned about. However, since your son’s body is weak, his mind is doing the only
thing it can do. Shutting down any unnecessary functions in order to heal the body”.
“How do we help?” Nikolas asked.
“You can start by talking to him. He needs to know that he’s safe, that it’s ok to
wake up. Reassure him. Let him know you’re here and want to help him. He should
respond to that”.
“Could there be anything else wrong with him?”
“We’ve checked him out. Physically, he’ll be fine. He’ll be in pain, but he will
recover. Mentally, we won’t know until he wakes up”.
“Can we see him?” Laura asked.
“He’s being transferred to ICU, and he will be allowed one visitor at a time. You
determine who you want to allow visits. When we have him settled, we’ll let you
know.”
“Thank you for everything, doctor” Luke said as the doctor left.

“What about Tom?” Elizabeth asked.
“Mac arrested him. He’s at PCPD right now, being booked for kidnapping, assault, and
attempted murder.

********

“I want to go to the hospital!” Tom yelled at Taggert from his cell.
“You have got to be joking” Taggert said.
“Look at what he did to me!” Tom said, pointing at his face.

Taggert had to hand it to Lucky. He had gotten in a few shots. Tom’s left eye was
swollen shut and his lips were swollen. That, along with several bruises.
There was also what appeared to be a shoe print on Tom’s left cheek. Taggert wondered
how Lucky had managed that.
“You have to take me, it’s my right” Tom insisted.

“He’s right, you know” Dara Jensen said from behind him. “He is entitled to medical
examination. If you don’t want to blow this case, you better take him to GH”.

Taggert knew she was right, but he didn’t want to take him. He didn’t deserve it.
After getting a good look at Lucky, Taggert had wanted to do what Luke Spencer almost
did: blow Tom’s brains out. He couldn’t do that though.
He couldn’t do this either. Lucky deserved better. Taggert was going to do this one
by the book, so there would be no chance of this scum getting off on a technicality.
“Guard!” he yelled. “Prep him, we’re taking him to GH”.
