Chapter 10: Questions

Black. Everything was black. He couldn’t see anything, but he ran as fast as he could. He ran in no particular direction, but he knew that he couldn’t stop. His breath came is short gasps, but he wouldn’t stop. He knew that he would die if he stopped. He turned to look behind him, but he couldn’t see him there. He couldn’t make anything out. He could feel him, though. He could feel him watching, and laughing at him. He was there, just beyond his reach, but he wouldn’t allow him to get anywhere near him. He turned once more, and still saw nothing. He continued to run, until suddenly, the darkens lifted and he realized that he was heading straight towards the edge of a cliff. He tried to change directions, but he had too much momentum and it was impossible to turn in time to avoid the edge. He dug his heels into the ground, to try and stop himself, but he had too much speed and before he knew it, he was tumbling into the abyss. He saw the bottom of the cliff and was about to scream, when he felt a pair of hands grab him from behind. They turned him around, and he found himself staring into Tom Baker’s face. He was kept from falling, but was not on land either. His feet just dangled in mid-air, just beyond the edge. He saw Tom Baker smile and the last thing he heard before Tom let him fall was ‘Remember what I told you’.

Lucky woke with a start, not realizing where he was. He straightened up, but a sudden rush of pain caused him to slump back in his seat. He looked around in confusion, until he remembered the events of the night before. He looked out the window and noticed that it was a bit light outside. It was almost morning. He looked over to the driver’s seat and noticed Tom looking at him, smiling slightly.

"Did you sleep well?" he asked.

"Just lovely" Lucky said, before he caught himself. He realized, with surprise, that he had actually spoken. Ever since Tom kidnapped him, he had been responding to Tom’s remarks without being able to utter a word. Now he actually spoke.

Tom must have taken off the gag sometime while he’d been unconscious.

He parted his lips and tentatively ran his tongue along them. He could feel them swollen and cracked. He was also surprised to taste blood still there.

"I felt sorry for you" Tom said. "Besides, I got tired of talking to myself".

"Where are you taking me?" Lucky asked.

"That’s my secret" Tom replied.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Why?" Tom asked. "I told you why".

"No you didn’t. All you said was that you were going to have a little fun with me".

"Isn’t that enough, or do you really want to know what I have in store for you?"

"Why? I didn’t do anything to you". Lucky said.

"I don’t think so.You did plenty to me, but that’s a conversation we will have once we reach our destination".

"Where’s that".

"I already told you, it’s my secret".

Lucky thought about what little he’d been told. He decided to try something else.

"You know the cops are out looking for you, right?" he asked.

Tom looked over at him and smiled, almost sympathetically. 'Apparently not' he thought.

"You can think that, if it makes you feel better" he finally said. "They won’t find me, though. I know how to hide, and after a while, they’ll stop looking".

Tom looked at Lucky and saw the unspoken question in his eyes. He smiled. If he had been in the same situation, Tom would want to know what was going to be done to him. He would let Lucky find that out when the time came.

"Don’t worry, Lucky" he finally said. "I’ll make sure to let your parents and your girlfriend know where to find your body" he smiled mischievously, "I won’t deny you a proper burial".
