My Heart Will Go On

By: Kat

The warm June breeze blew across the Port Charles high football field. The bleachers were decorated in Gold, and Green streamers, and Balloons. Lucky Spencer walks out on to the track, he looked around. This being one of the first times he had actually been here.

Lucky Spencer had never really been one for school spirit, he had never been one to sit outside on a cold October evening and watch a bunch of guys run across a field over a brown ball. He walked towards the bleachers, trying to understand how he had left all of this behind. Trying to understand how he had left something and someone so important to him, before he knew how important they were.

Ten years ago he had left, right before his graduation ceremony and now he was back to surprise his younger sister at hers. As he had walked through town he saw how different things were, buildings had changed, businesses come and gone. The docks had been renovated and the catacombs closed off. People though, he didn’t know who had changed, who had stayed the same, who had left, who had come, and who had returned. He walked over towards a tree far off in the distance so he could watch the events that would take place later.

Emily Quartermaine looked around her classroom, one final time. Books had been put in their boxes, maps had been taken down, overheads, and computers in storage. Emily sighed as she picked up her box of personal items and her teal denim purse. She headed out of the school and decided to cut through the football field to get a sneak peak at the decorations for later that evening before everything wilted and suffered from the heat and cramped bodies that would be sitting there in only a few hours.

Emily walked through the opening, remembering her own graduation ten years before. She turned and looked at the bleachers, flashing back to that June day, and how she had been so disappointed in Lucky that he couldn’t stay just a few more hours before leaving. She turned away and towards a tree. Her hands lost all feeling as she saw him. She dropped the box cracking the glass in her silver picture frame that contained a picture of her and Lucky only days before he left.

Emily:(whispering) Lucky……It can’t be, not now.

Emily got down on her knees and began to pick up the broken pieces of glass. She couldn’t believe he had come back, she couldn’t believe he was back now. She left the box and stood up and walked over to the tree, and Lucky.

***~~***~~***

Emily: What the hell are you doing back here Spencer?

Lucky had been looking in the opposite direction of Emily, other wise he would have been able to deal with the ambush. Lucky spun around and smiled at her.

Lucky: My baby sister is graduating this afternoon isn’t she?

Emily: Yes she is. But that’s not what I mean. What I mean is how the hell can you just walk back into Port Charles and everyone else’s lives?

Lucky: Emily, this isn’t the reaction I expected from you. Have you forgotten what we mean to each other?

Emily: You mean meant to each other. Things ended on OUR graduation day, you missed something that was supposed to be important to both of us. You acted like it was nothing, and would never mean anything.

Lucky: Em, it was just a ceremony.

Emily: Just a ceremony? Tell that to the kids who will be here later today, who have worked there butts off to get here, who have spent countless hours studying just to make C’s. Tell that to the kids who won’t get to go to college and this is their only chance to make there parents proud. Tell it to them, I sure as hell can’t.

Lucky: Here I thought you would be happy to see me.

Emily: No, I made myself a promise ten years ago I would never be happy to see you unless you’ve decided to make things right. I doubt that’s why you’re here though.

Lucky: Emily, I’m sorry I didn’t show up for graduation. You know I had to leave, you know what I saw, you know what Helena threatened to do.

Emily: Believe me I know, I know more about that then you can ever know or understand. Good-bye.

Emily begins to walk away, her heart pounding and the anger building inside her body. Her hands were shaking and her eyes filling with tears.

***~~***~~***

Emily bent down and picked up the box. She took out a ceramic picture frame with a picture of a young boy, with brown hair and brown eyes. She smiled at this image and put it back in the box. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned around. Lucky was standing there, confusion written all over his face as he tried to understand why she had reacted this way to him and his return.

Lucky: (softly) Emily, what’s going on. What are you not telling me.

Emily: (tears welling in here eyes.) If you had at least kept in contact you would have a right to know.

Emily began to walk away and Lucky grabbed her arm. The framed picture of the boy went flying and Emily shook her arm out of Lucky’s grip and started to run after it. It hit the ground before she could reach it, luckily it only broke the glass. Emily got down on her hands and knees and began to pick up. She looked up at Lucky, as though she could kill him.

Emily: What the Hell was that for? Can’t you just for once deal with the idea that maybe someone doesn’t want to talk to you?

Lucky: Emily, I know you to well, and I know your hiding something from me.

Emily: (clutching the frame) You don’t deserve to know.

Lucky: (takes the frame from her) Does this have something to do with why you’re upset with me?

Emily: (trying to snatch it back) Like I said before you DON’T deserve to know.

Lucky catches a small glimpse at the pictures. He can see the brown hair and brown eyes. He can’t tell how old the child is though, and even if he could he’d be off base since the picture was a few years old.

Lucky: I see you’ve moved on, gotten married had a son.

Emily: Whatever you say.

Lucky: You may not believe this now but I love you, I loved you then the day I left, and I loved you the night we made love in the cabin.

Emily: I know, I loved you then to.

Emily walks away with tears in her eyes.

2 weeks before graduation, ten years earlier.

Emily and Lucky walk into a cabin, filled with modern conveyances.

Emily: You basically went all out for a weekend between best-friends.

Lucky: Well we graduate in two weeks so I had to make it totally spectacular.

Emily: You out did my wildest dreams. I mean this is the kind of place you get for you and your girlfriend.

Lucky: Em, I want to talk about that.

Emily: (turning to face him.) Talk about what?

Lucky: You and Me, and how much you mean to me.

Emily: Lucky….you’re my best friend but I have no clue what you are talking about.

Lucky: (Takes her hand in his.) Emily, a few weeks ago when you and I were decorating for the Dance, I realized something.

Emily: (slightly afraid) What did you realize?

Lucky: That I love you.

Emily’s hand slips from Lucky’s and she slumps down on the armrest of the couch. She looks up at him and opens her mouth as though to speak but nothing comes out. Lucky puts a finger to her lips and smiles. His finger strokes her face as he moves his hand to the nape of her neck. His hand stays there as his eyes lock with Emily’s. He leans in slowly and kisses her at first softly and feather light on the lips and as the chemical reaction between them clicks, the kiss gets harder, deeper and even more intense. They break away both trying to catch there breath.

Emily: Did you tell me you love me?

Lucky: (nods) Yeah I did.

Emily: Oh Lucky (throws her arms around him) I never thought I would hear you say that.

Lucky: Why?

Emily: I never expected you to feel the same way about me that I do about you. (his eyes widen, and Emily smiles.) I Love you!! Do you know how long I’ve wanted to say that?

Lucky: How long?

Emily: Since Boston.

Lucky: BOSTON!?

Emily: Yeah.

Lucky: Here I thought since the Cave was a long time.

Emily: Since the cave really?

Lucky: (pushing some hair away from her eyes) Yeah, since the cave.

***~~***~~***

Emily parked her car outside the Spencer house, she left the box in the backseat of the car. As she walked up the path she could still feel Lucky’s hand on her arm. She started up the steps and the door flew open. The boy from the picture came running out and over to Emily.

Emily: Isaac! Hey kiddo, how are you?

Isaac: Mommy! Auntie Lulu and Grandma were getting ready for the graduation tonight.

Emily: Wow, let’s go in so I can talk to them and you can get your bag. Okay?

Isaac: Okay Mommy.

Isaac and Emily go inside. Lulu and Laura come down the stairs.

Lulu: Hi Emily,(noticing that Emily is glum) Everything alright?

Emily: I have to talk to the two of you. (looks down at Isaac) Honey, go get your bag.

Laura: Emily, what’s wrong?

Emily: (Checking to make sure Isaac is out of earshot.) Lucky’s back. I saw him this afternoon at the football field. Same place he was suppose to meet me ten years before. By the tree.

Laura: How did he look?

Emily: Hansom, healthy, wonderful, and he smiled, just like Luke’s.

Lulu: Did you tell him about Isaac?

Emily: I couldn’t. I still feel he doesn’t deserve to know. I was going to tell him that night. I had found out a few days before. We’d only been a couple for two weeks but in our hearts we had been together for much longer.(looking down at the floor) Besides it’s not as though I can blurt out to him. Lucky you have a son. He’s nine years old and the most wonderful little boy in the world.

Laura: Of course not.

Isaac comes running down the stairs, with his bag. He’s got a smile on his face as he reaches the living room he runs to his grandmother.

Isaac: Grandma! There’s a truck pulling up in front of the house! It’s fire engine red!

Laura: Really?

Isaac: Yeah!

There’s a knock at the door and Emily’s heart stops. She knows it’s Lucky. She can feel it deep down inside her. Laura take’s Isaac’s hand and walks to the door. Lulu looks at Emily and can see the fear, and anticipation in her eyes. Laura opens the door slowly as though afraid to see who it is. Then as the door is wide enough to see who it is. Laura’s face has a huge smile, the kind only a mother can have after she sees her child she hasn’t seen in so long.

Laura: Lucky! (Pulling him into a hug with her free arm) You’re home! It’s true, you’re really home!

Lucky: (pulling away smiling.) How did you know?

Emily: (stepping forward) I told her. (putting her hand out) Isaac, we have to go now.

Isaac: Mommy, do we have to?

Emily: We’ve got to go home and get changed for tonight. You do want to see Lulu graduate tonight don’t you?

Isaac: Yes mommy, I want to see Auntie Lulu get married.

Lucky: Auntie Lulu?

Isaac: Her brothers my Daddy.

Lucky: (turns to face Emily) You and Nikolas?

Emily: Lucky, Kitchen. NOW!

Lucky jumps at Emily’s demand. Both went into the Kitchen and Emily closed the door behind herself.

***~~***~~***

Emily turned and looked at him. She was mad, and Lucky could tell.

Lucky: What did I do now?

Emily: (Practically in tears) How could you ever think that I would marry and have a child with Nikolas?

Lucky: You didn’t?

Emily: No!

Lucky: Then who is Lulu’s brother who’s your son’s father?

Emily: If it’s not Nikolas theirs only one other person it could be. Remember when I said you didn’t deserve to know. That’s because I was going to tell you graduation night.

Emily leaves the Kitchen and Lucky alone with his thoughts.

***~~***~~***

Emily ran out of the kitchen, she ran right past Isaac.

Isaac: Mommy? Mommy?

Isaac starts to run after his mother as Lucky steps out from the kitchen. He looks at Isaac, he sees the same look, Lucky himself had given his parents many years before. Isaac moves over to Laura and grabs hold of her Leg.

Isaac: Grandma, what’s wrong with Mommy?

Laura: Isaac, your mother just probably got into an argument with Lucky.

Isaac: Whose Lucky? Is he Lulu’s other brother?

Laura: How many brothers do you think Lulu has?

Isaac: Three, Nikolas, Lucky and my Daddy.

Laura: (sighs) Oh, well do you want to meet Lucky?

Isaac: I don’t know he made mommy cry.

Laura: Yeah, you know what. Why don’t you and Aunt Lulu go upstairs and you can help her pick her dress for tonight while I talk to Lucky.

Isaac: Alright, come on Aunt Lulu.

Isaac runs over and grabs Lulu’s hand. She smiles and then turns to look at Lucky and her eyes turn cold. Isaac begins to drag her and they go upstairs. Lucky steps forward but doesn’t speak until he hears Lulu’s door close.

Lucky: What’s going on here?

Laura: Your son is upstairs playing with your sister.

Lucky: Emily’s right, I didn’t and still don’t deserve to know.

Laura: Why did you come back? Why did you leave?

Lucky: (takes a deep breath) I came back because I couldn’t stay away. It’s been ten years and I couldn’t stay away. I left because, well because I was afraid that Emily wouldn’t give me a yes.

Laura: What was the question?

Lucky: I planned on asking her to marry me.

Laura: She would have said yes.

Lucky: I know but I was still afraid.

Laura: Fear, if we let Fear control our lives you never would have meet Emily.

***~~***~~***

Emily sat in her car, she was in the Hospital Parking lot. She just sat there looking at the ceiling of the car. After about an hour and a half someone tapped on her window. She rolled it down and saw Nikolas standing next to her car.

Nikolas: Em, what’s wrong?

Emily: He’s back.

Nikolas: Lucky?

Emily: Who else.

Nikolas: Where’d he show up?

Emily: The football field by the tree.(holding back tears) The same DAMN place we were suppose to meet 10 years ago.

Nikolas: Oh Emily, did you tell him about Isaac?

Emily: When he showed up at Laura’s he found out. But first he had the GALL to ask if Ike was Yours.

Nikolas: How could he think that?!

Emily: (tears streaming down her face now) I don’t know. He doesn’t know how much I loved him, (looking at her hands on the steering wheel.) Or how much I still love him.

Nikolas: Emily, I know you love him but he hurt you once aren’t you afraid he’ll hurt you again?

Emily: I am, that’s why I don’t want to have anything to do with him.

Nikolas: Take a deep breath and go home get changed and go back to that football field and watch the seniors YOU taught graduate from high school. How many of those kids did you have to chase after there first two years of High School?

Emily: Too many to count.

Nikolas: You are a wonderful teacher, those kids look up to you including Lulu. Do you want to let them down cause of my idiotic brother?

Emily: I won’t. I better go I’ll see you there right?

Nikolas: Lulu would kill me if I wasn’t there.

Emily: She’s not the only one.

***~~***~~***

An Hour Later at the football field.

The bleachers are filled with approximately 150 students. All wearing green Cap and Gowns. Lulu is in the fourth row of the bleachers. While Laura, Emily, Nikolas and Isaac are on the folding chairs on the field. Lucky is standing by the tree, same place he was only hours before and the same place he was supposed to meet Emily 10 years earlier. Pomp and Circumstance began to play as the Principle read off the names and the diploma’s were handed out. As several of the names were read Emily felt tears in her eyes knowing she had helped them get where they were now. After the ceremony Lucky stayed by the tree. Isaac, Laura and Nikolas went to talk to Lulu, Emily however was cosmically drawn to her one time lover. She slowly walked towards him her heart pounding knowing she had to have a civilized conversation with him.

Lucky saw her coming and smiled.

Lucky: Hi, your not going to slug me are you?

Emily: I’m no longer in a violent mood.

Lucky: Well that’s good. (looking at his family gathered around his sister) Where’s my father?

Emily: Luke left town 7 years ago, after he found out as did everyone else that he is Nikolas’s father.

Lucky: What?

Emily: Nikolas is your full brother. I shouldn’t have been the one to tell you. I’m just a woman you claimed to love then left before she could tell you, you WERE going to be a Daddy.

Lucky: Emily, I never wanted to hurt you. I was afraid of being hurt.

Emily: This isn’t the time nor the place. Isaac’s sleeping over at Ned and V’s this evening so stop by my apartment and we can talk.(she took out a small piece of paper and placed it in his hand.) If you’re not there I’ll try to understand.

***~~***~~***

Emily walked into her darkened apartment and hit the light switch. When the lights came on she saw Luke Spencer sitting on her couch.

Emily: What the hell is this?! Give Emily a heart-attack day?

Luke: (standing) Hello to you to. Surprised to see me?

Emily: I knew you’d show up sooner or later. Actually what surprised me was stepping on to the PCHS football field and seeing your youngest Son standing where he should have been ten years ago.

Luke: So he finally came back.

Emily: Yeah, ya know we all thought you were dead.

Luke: Really? Well I’m not. I needed time to think, and clear my head.

Emily: It’s defiantly your side of the family.

Luke: You say that why?

Emily: You like to run off, Nikolas does, and Lucky does. I’ll be surprised if Isaac doesn’t run off.

Luke: Where is my grandson anyway?

Emily: He’s at Ned and V’s this evening. Ya know your gonna make a liar out of me.

Luke: How so?

Emily: I told Lucky you left town just 20 minutes ago. (sighing as she sits on the arm of the couch) He’s suppose to stop by, but I’m not planning my night around that.

Luke: That boy loves you! He’s crazy about you!

Emily: It’s been 10 years! He doesn’t love me!

Luke: My boy has loved you forever!

Emily: He doesn’t love me and I sure as hell don’t (starts to stutter) Lov..Lo…love him.

Luke: I’m right about this!

Emily: Oh God! I can’t do this. I’ve never stopped loving him. I tried, I tried hating him but I couldn’t. I can’t.

Luke: I know. He’ll be here soon, give him hell. I myself must now get my own batch of Hell from Laura and Lesley Lu.

Emily: Bye Luke.

Luke: Bye Darlin.

***~~***~~***

Luke had left twenty minutes before, and Emily sat on her couch in a pair of black sweat pants and a big baggy coral tee-shirt. She had the stereo on and it was playing "half the World" by Belinda Carlisle.

*Only one shadow on the wall
Just one candle burning bright
I hold your picture to my heart
I'm alone inside the night
The sun comes up in China ... the lights go on in Rome *

There was a knock on the door and Emily went to answer it.

*Half the world is waiting for someone they can hold
Half the world is praying they'll never be alone
Everytime you leave me a part of me goes too
And half your world is waiting here for you *

Emily answered the door and there he was.

Emily: You showed up, I’m surprised.

Lucky: Shouldn’t be babe.

Emily: Luke’s back.

Lucky: Oh really?

Emily: Yeah. Can we just get this over with?

Lucky: Get what over with?

*I reach across an empty bed
I hear your whisper in my ear
But like the sun without the moon
It's half a dream without you here
The train that takes you from me
Brings somebody home *

Lucky stepped into the apartment and looked around. He heard the song.

Emily: Lucky I want to know the TRUTH.

Lucky: About?

Emily: Damn it Spencer! The REAL reason why you didn’t show up ten years ago.

Lucky sat down on the couch and Emily sank down on the arm of the couch and studied him.

*Half the world is waiting for someone they can hold
Half the world is praying they'll never be alone
Everytime you leave me a part of me goes too
And half your world is waiting here for you *

Lucky: You really want to know?

Emily: I’ve wanted to know since they called your name and you weren’t there.

Lucky: (looks down at his hands and then back at Emily) Because I was afraid.

Emily: OF WHAT?!

Lucky: That you would say no.

Emily: Lucky, we kinda went all the way! I gave birth to OUR son! To Lucas Isaac Spencer! What do you think I was going to say no to?

Lucky: I wanted to propose.

*Baby the earth stands still
When I'm lying next to you
No matter where you go
Our whole world's inside this room
The sun comes up in China
The lights go on in Rome ... oh *

Emily slowly and unconsciously slides down onto the cushion of the couch. She looks at him wide eyed.

Emily: You wanted to do what?

Lucky: I wanted to ask you to marry me.

Emily: (looks into his eyes) I would have said yes, a million times.

Lucky: I know, I didn’t want to lose my angel, you and I was afraid that was what I was doing.

Emily: Why would you think that?

Lucky: I don’t know I just did.

*Half the world is waiting for someone they can hold
Half the world is praying they'll never be alone
And everytime you leave me my heart breaks in two
And half the world is waiting here for you *

Emily takes his hand in hers and he looks up at her. She took her other hand and rested it on his cheek.

Emily: I have to be honest with you.

Lucky: About?

Emily: I never stopped loving you. I tried to hate you but I couldn’t, I tried not to love you but I couldn’t.

Lucky: Emily, I love you. I never ever stopped. I’ve always loved you.

*I'm waiting here for you ... *

Emily leans closer to Lucky and pressed her lips against his softly. They release the others hand and Lucky wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her closer to his body. The kiss deepens and when they finally break apart there breathless.

Emily: Why is it everytime we wait for forever to kiss were breathless in the end?

Lucky: All of our kisses have left you breathless.

Emily: Well that’s true.

Emily rested her head on his shoulder as Lucky began digging in his pocket for something.

Emily: What are you looking for?

Lucky: Something that’s ten years too late.

Lucky finally finds what he’s looking for and slides off the couch. He takes her left hand in his and looks up at her.

Lucky: Emily Rose Bowen-Quartermaine, You’ve had the key to my heart since that day in Kelly’s, and you’ve been the only one who knows how to unlock the lock since our little adventure. I’ve known I love you for more then ten years. (Emily’s eyes widen with surprise) Emily, will you marry me?

Emily: (Wiping a tear from her eyes and slides of the couch and sits next to him) Lucas Lorenzo Spencer Junior, Yes! I’ll marry you!

Lucky: Oh Emily!

Lucky wraps his arms around her, never wanting to let her go.

The End
the song is Half The World by Belinda Carlise
